 | What is Smartwool?
Although by no means a new fabric , it is only in the past few years that the full potential of Merino wool has been realised. Smartwool only use superfine Merino wool in their baselayers and socks because of its ability to regulate temperature , moisture and odour, whether you're running a marathon in summer or winter climbing. Simply put, it allows wearers whether sherpas or sheep to stay comfortable in all conditions , hot or cold , making it the most versatile baselayer in the world. The reason boils down to the Smartwool fibre. Over years of protecting sheep on exposed hillsides , the fibre has evolved to keep its host cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Firstly it has evolved to include thousands of tiny air pockets that , like insulation in your house , act as a buffer against cold and heat. In winter it traps heat in and in the summer it keeps it out. Secondly are its unique moisture-handling properties. Synthetics can only move moisture once its turned to liquid (ie you've already started visibly sweating). Thanks to its porous fibres , Smartwool can move moisture in both liquid and vapour state so it evaporates and wicks at the same time. Thirdly, unlike synthetic baselayers , Smartwool baselayers can be worn for several days in a row without them becoming smelly and antisocial. Lastly, because the Smartwool is so fine they are very soft and comfortable with no itch.
Quite simply , once you try Smartwool be it their socks or their baselayers you'll never look back. |
